October 20th Diabetes Addictions, my recovery and the passing of friends
20th October – Diabetes, Addictions, Recovery and the passing of friends
- It’s been over a month since my last diary entry, but today I felt the urge to reconnect with “The Conscious Diabetic” and document both my training progress and life journey. I believe it’s important to share not only the highs but also the lows—to provide a full, truthful picture of what life really is. If I’m not honest with myself, the facade I create will eventually crumble.
Today is bittersweet. On one hand, I’m proud to have collected my 9-month keytag from my NA meetings, marking 9 months of clean time and ongoing recovery from addiction. It’s a huge milestone, especially considering the state I was in when I first walked into those meetings—completely exhausted, broken, and mentally drained. The journey over these past months has been long, tough, and deeply challenging, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. In just this short time, I’ve transformed my life, rebuilt relationships, and reimagined a future worth fighting for.
Addiction is a cruel disease, one that isolates, corrupts, and destroys from the inside out. Coming to that realization was one of the most profound spiritual experiences of my life—acknowledging the depths of my struggle while also recognizing that there’s a solution through the NA program.
Unfortunately, life reminds us of its fragility. On Saturday, September 19th, I received devastating news that an old friend of 40 years had passed away due to alcohol-related complications. Losing Gareth is a painful reminder of the reality of addiction. He will be deeply missed. RIP Gareth.
On a brighter note, I’ve recently wrapped up my summer work, which means I now have more time to focus on training for the 2025 CrossFit Open. I’m back to training for 2 to 3 hours, five days a week. My routine starts with an 8 km dog walk while wearing a 10 kg weighted vest, followed by a mix of CrossFit and swimming. In October, I’m focusing on mobility issues with my hip and adapting to various movements. Consistency and discipline are my guiding principles as I continue this journey.
In terms of nutrition, I’m currently working on gaining weight and building muscle. My diet remains consistent, but I’ll soon resume sharing photos and videos of the meals that work best for my diabetes management.
On a personal level, there’s a lot in the pipeline. I’m working to complete my book, “The Conscious Diabetic,” and will be relaunching my podcast soon. More content is on the way through social media, and a whole new business venture is taking shape. So, stay tuned—exciting things are ahead.
